Bottle and can collection drives have been used as environmentally friendly fundraisers since states started paying for redeemed bottles and cans, but today fundraising groups can take it a step further to rid the world of carelessly tossed phone and office equipment as well.

Cell phones and printer cartridges are highly recyclable items; what's more, these are items that are made (sometimes almost entirely) from petroleum-based plastics. Keeping these items out of landfills goes a long way towards clean environment initiatives and preserving resources, but it can also bring some very significant cash into your organization.

There are a number of companies that have programs for partnering fundraising groups and will actually pay cash for redeemed printer cartridges and cell phones. Each company has their own guidelines for what they can accept, how and when payment is made. In general,

• Ink jet cartridges (like those found in most home computer printers today) are almost always accepted


• Laser cartridges (such as those found in large office printers) are accepted by some companies


• Major brands of cell phones are accepted by companies that include cell phone recycling collection programs


• Payment may be made monthly after a collection cut-off date, or


• Payment may be made after a certain number of acceptable units are redeemed
