Read On! Magazine Fundraisers

Magazine sale drives have become increasingly popular over the last several years as fundraisers. Why is that? Because magazine subscriptions are something people are already investing in anyway, and a useful product for consumers.

Running A Magazine Fundraiser

Magazine fundraisers are run through brochure or catalog sales. Your organization will need to research magazine distributors and fundraising companies to find the right fit. Some questions you might want to ask include:

  • How wide a selection of magazine subscriptions are offered through their fundraiser
If there is a cost to your group for brochures and catalogs, and if that cost increases or decreases with smaller or larger selections

  • If customers can renew current subscriptions through your fundraiser and have the renewal count as a sale for you (most reputable magazine fundraising companies now offer this ability)

  • Are marketing materials provided, and are materials provided to support long-distance order taking campaigns; does the program include online ordering capabilities?

  • What is the profit margin for placed subscriptions?

  • Will profit margins increase based on the volume of subscriptions sold?

  • Are incentives and prizes provided by your company for top sellers or benchmark sales volumes?

Most magazine fundraisers do include some ability to raise funds long-distance by either having participants mail out letters to friends and relatives and having them submit an order form to the company or mail it back to the seller. Or better yet, many magazine fundraisers can be run solely by e-mail, without the need to send out any order forms. The e-mail simply contains a link directly to the magazine company's website where the order can be filled and profits are automatically attributed to your cause. Either approach is helpful because it increases outreach and does not limit your group to an area that may already be supporting several fundraising organizations.

Subscription selections can vary from between 20 and 700 or more magazine titles. Both large and small selections have their advantages. Smaller selections are easier to manage and may be less expensive as an overall campaign, but larger selections ensure something for everyone.

There are other advantages to fundraising through magazine subscription drives as well. Subscriptions can also be purchased as gifts; profits (usually between 20 and 60%) are immediately available; there is no need to deal with the product for storage or distribution after the sale – the company handles delivery directly.

Magazine drives are appealing fundraisers that serve the needs of both sponsoring groups and supporters. Since magazine subscriptions run out annually, annual drives can be run to recapture the consumed subscription market; if you let your supporters know you will run subsequent magazine fundraisers year after year, they will gladly hold their renewals to support you and the organization they love.
